"We, the Bardwell Family, are a culturally and professionally diverse creative force committed to academic excellence, not only praising those who shine naturally, but strengthening those who are only beginning to emerge from the shade" -Sharon Beauregard, Bardwell Scholar

MISSION

Roger Bardwell Scholarships is a non-profit organization housed at Harold Washington College. Bardwell Scholarships exist in living memory of Roger W. Bardwell, a man whose life was defined by commitment to and innovation in public education. The Bardwell Scholarship Program assists motivated, dedicated students who profit from a mentoring relationship and who would otherwise be unable to achieve a college education.

HISTORY

Roger Bardwell was a thinker, a man of strong and innovative ideas. He had a passion to be involved and embraced change, both personally and professionally, as vital to progressive thought.

Roger's life work was public education. He had done it all, from school custodian to teacher to superintendent, and he truly excelled at administrative work. He believed in strong organizations where the leader led by example, and where participation was vital to democratic decision making.

Roger died suddenly and tragically in 1994, but his legacy and commitment to public education live on through Bardwell Scholarships.

Please watch our WTTW/PBS video for a more detailed and inspiring account of the scholarship's origins, Roger's legacy, and our current work:
